Director of Legal
Job Description:
In this role, you will work with market leaders and senior leadership on a variety of legal needs and issues for a national media company with over 1,000 employees. This role will also work closely with HR and business leaders, and reports to the Vice President of Legal. While most of your time will be spent on employment-related legal issues, there will be a variety of corporate and business-related matters as well.

- Oversee and manage legal matters, with a focus on employment law, but also corporate and business legal needs, privacy and IP compliance, contracts etc.
- Develop and implement policies, company procedures and documents to minimize legal risks and ensure compliance of federal and local employment laws.
- Provide strategic advice, training and individual guidance to market leaders and managers.
- Negotiate, review and draft a wide range of corporate and business documents and contracts, including employment documents, technology agreements, vendor agreements, data privacy and other legal documents.
- Represent the company in employment and commercial business administrative matters and coordinate with outside legal counsel and opposing counsel.
- Oversee employment law changes, including employee classifications, medical leave, workplace accommodations, FLSA and other wage laws.
- Conduct workplace investigations and oversee workplace legal complaints.
- Advise on performance management, terminations and work authorization issues.
- Assist with the legal aspects of recruitment, background checks, onboarding, training and development and employee relations.
- Cultivate strong working relationships within the company.
- Exhibit a coachable mindset and take an active role in training and development.
- Must have the ability to function in a virtual environment at times and lead/conduct virtual meetings (Zoom, TEAMS, WebEx, and other virtual meeting platforms).
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and bar license in at least one jurisdiction in good standing.
- At least 3 years of experience at a law firm or as in-house counsel, preferably with experience in employment law.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy and technology efficient.
- Proficiency with all Microsoft Office products (Microsoft Excel, Outlook, OneDrive, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams).
- Critical thinking, attention to detail, organization and ability to work efficiently and independently in a changing environment.
